PC built in 2012 - Open Case and Install Power Supply

Remove the side and top panels from the case.

First we remove the side and top panels.

We remove 4 thumb screws at the back so that we can remove the two side panels of the case.

Another six screws allow the top panel to be removed.

Remove the motherboard panel from the case.

Three screws (one at the back of the case, one at the top of the tray and one at the bottom) allow the motherboard tray to be removed.

Install the Power supply.

I installed the power supply with 3 of the 4 screws that came with the power supply.

The intake fan for the power supply is underneath which means that it takes air from inside the case rather from outside.

This might have the disadvantage, for the cooling of the PS, that the power supply is drawing in air from inside the case which is hotter.

However, it also has advantages that:

  • There is not a noisy air intake on the top of the case.
  • I can block the vent on the top of the case to minimise dust entry.
  • This improves air flow from front to back of the case.

power supply installed

I think this is the best arrangement because we are unlikely to draw full power and so we can afford extra heat in the power supply.

Anyway, we don't have much choice as the screw holes are not symmetrical and therefore it would be difficult to install the power supply upside down.
