Telematics Building Blocks

BUILDING BLOCK 1.0 S240 (DM3640) X.25 SWITCH

Description

The S240 (DM3640) Programmable Communications Processor can be configured for a number of different applications. The X.25 switch is one particular configuration that can have up to 12 high speed (64K) connections or 32 low speed (19.2K) connections or a mixture of the two.

Performance

The design factor used for the packet switching capability of the box is 183 dpkt/s. This is based on a packet size of 128 and a window size of 2 and X.25 Software version F0. It should be noted that all permutations may not have been tested.

Availability

Not available at present.

Software

X.25 Switch Software.

Memory required: 4.0 Mbytes

Hardware

There are four different LPE (line processor expansion) cards that can be used in the configuration of a S240 X.25 backbone switch. A description of these cards is presented below:

+------------------------------+--------------+--------------+--------------+
| Description | Max. No. of | Port Speed | Max. No. of |
| | Cards/Box | | Ports/Box |
+------------------------------+--------------+--------------+--------------+
| 8 Port LPE card. | 4 | 19.2kbps | 32 |

* LPE cards can provide Asynchronous and Synchronous capability.

5K7 Permutations

Possible combinations of low speed and high LPE cards.

 +----------+-----------+
|Low Speed |High Speed |

+----------+-----------+
 | 3 | 1 |
+----------+-----------+
| 2 | 2 |
+----------+-----------+
| 0 | 3 |
+----------+-----------+

The maximum number of high speed cards that can be placed in a S240 is 3. The restriction arises due to the scanning limit on the box. No low speed ports can be used if all twelve 64K ports are utilised.

BUILDING BLOCK 3.0 S240 ACP20 (DM3140) ASYNC PAD

Description

The ACP20 (DM3140) is a multi-protocol pad that can be configured for different applications. The ASYNC PAD is one particular configuration that can have up to 16 asynchronous connections with a single X.25 connection.

Performance

Throughput = 133.33/(packet-fill*0.111+/(1*0.270))

This is for a 9.6k line only (2 may be supplied for resilience).

Packet-fill has been tested over the range 1 to 1024.

Availability

A five card unit will have an availability of 0.99984, where MTTR = 5 hours. No MTBF figures are available from Operations as the ACP20 has not been in service long enough. Calculated design MTBF figures have been supplied by Telematics for various components of the ACP20 for a worst case guide, but is not guaranteed by BTTE.
